COCUS Mild Steel Dowel Bars are essential components for high-quality concrete flatwork, providing critical load transfer across expansion and contraction (movement) joints. A plain round mild-steel bar is placed across the joint to transfer load between adjacent slabs while allowing horizontal movement — keeping the slabs level and preventing them from stepping or cracking at the joint. Used with a debond sleeve on one end so the bar can slide freely as the concrete expands and contracts.

Available in 12mm, 16mm and 20mm diameters and 400mm, 600mm and 900mm lengths — singly or in packs of 5 and 10 — for industrial floors, slabs, driveways, paths and ground beams.

Please note: these are mild (black) steel bars, ideal for standard internal and ground-bearing slabs. For chloride-rich, coastal or de-icing-salt environments, a galvanised or stainless dowel is the more corrosion-resistant option.

Key Technical Features
Premium Grade S275 Steel: Manufactured from high-quality mild steel, providing the optimum balance of ductility and shear strength required for structural concrete joints.

Smooth Surface Finish: A precision-rolled smooth surface lets the bar slide within the second slab (when used with a debond sleeve), facilitating thermal expansion and contraction.

Load Transfer Efficiency: Specifically designed to transfer shear loads across joints, preventing slab "stepping" and protecting joint edges from spalling under heavy vehicle traffic.

Precision Cut Ends: All bars are sawn with clean, square ends to prevent snagging within dowel sleeves and to ensure accurate positioning within the formwork.

Versatile Application: Ideal for floor slabs, hardstandings, road pavements, driveways, paths, ground beams and any large-scale reinforced concrete project requiring movement joints.

Available Sizes: Supplied in 12mm, 16mm and 20mm diameters and 400mm, 600mm and 900mm lengths, as single bars or in packs of 5 and 10 to suit the job.

Please note: these are mild (black) steel dowels, well suited to standard internal and ground-bearing slabs. In chloride-rich, coastal or de-icing-salt environments, specify a galvanised or stainless steel dowel for greater corrosion resistance.

1. Why use 16mm bars instead of 12mm or 20mm?

A: 16mm is the industry "workhorse" size, providing excellent shear capacity for standard industrial floors (150mm–200mm thick) without the excessive weight and cost of larger bars.

2. Are these bars galvanised?

These are standard "self-colour" mild steel bars. If your project is in a highly corrosive environment (like a coastal area or chemical plant), please contact us regarding galvanised or stainless steel options.

3. Can I use these as standard reinforcement rebar?

A: While they are made of steel, these are smooth bars designed for movement joints. Standard reinforcement rebar is "ribbed" to bond with the concrete. Dowel bars are intentionally smooth to allow for sliding movement.

4. Do you supply the dowel sleeves to match?

Yes — we supply matching COCUS PVC Dowel Bar Sleeves to suit 12mm and 16mm bars, so the free end of the dowel has room to move as the concrete expands and contracts.

5. What is the benefit of using a smooth dowel bar versus a ribbed rebar in a joint?

Using a smooth bar is critical for the "sliding" mechanism of a movement joint. Ribbed rebar is designed to grip and bond permanently with the concrete; if used in a joint, it would lock the two slabs together. This prevents the concrete from naturally expanding and contracting, which inevitably leads to stress cracks and structural failure. The smooth surface of our 16mm dowel bar, especially when combined with a debonding agent, ensures the slabs can move independently while still transferring heavy loads vertically.
