Why Convex Mirrors Are Used for Safety
A flat mirror can only reflect what is directly in front of it. A convex mirror — curved outward towards the viewer — compresses a wide field of view into a single reflective surface, typically providing a viewing angle of up to 160 degrees. This makes it possible for one correctly positioned mirror to give a driver or pedestrian visibility around a blind corner, into an obscured area, or along an approach they cannot otherwise see.
This wide-angle characteristic is why convex mirrors are a standard recommendation in workplace transport risk assessments under HSG136 Workplace Transport Safety. Where vehicles and pedestrians share routes, or where sightlines are restricted by racking, walls, or corners, mirrors provide advance warning that allows both parties to slow or stop before a collision occurs, and should feature as part of any well-considered warehouse safety plan.
Where to Position Convex Safety Mirrors
Warehouse Exits and Internal Corners
Any corner in a warehouse where a forklift might emerge onto a pedestrian route — or where two vehicle lanes meet at an angle — should have a convex mirror. Position the mirror so that approaching drivers can see around the corner before committing to the junction. The mirror should be visible from at least the braking distance for the vehicles operating in that area.
Loading Bay Exits
Loading bays are inherently hazardous: vehicles reversing, pedestrians moving between lorries, and limited sightlines in all directions. Mirrors positioned at the exit of a loading bay allow drivers leaving the area to check for approaching vehicles or pedestrians before pulling out.
Car Park Exits onto Roads
Where a private car park or site road exits onto a public road — particularly where vegetation, walls, or parked vehicles restrict visibility — a convex mirror mounted on the exit approach allows drivers to see approaching road traffic before pulling out. This is a common requirement for planning permission on commercial premises.
Shop and Retail Interiors
Indoor convex mirrors in retail environments are used for loss prevention, but also for safety: in larger stores, stockrooms, or warehouses where trolleys and customers interact, mirrors help prevent collisions at aisle ends and around corners.
Site Roads and Blind Bends
On internal site roads with bends or crests that restrict forward visibility, mirrors give approaching drivers advance sight of oncoming traffic, allowing them to slow and yield appropriately.
Choosing the Right Size
The diameter of a convex mirror determines how far away the reflected image can be seen clearly, and consequently how much warning time it provides. As a general guide:
- 300mm diameter: Suitable for indoor corridors and narrow passageways where viewing distance is short — typically up to around 5 metres.
- 450mm diameter: A versatile indoor size for larger warehouses, retail areas, and internal corners where viewing distances are moderate.
- 600–800mm diameter: Appropriate for outdoor use or large warehouse spaces with longer viewing distances. Suitable for most car park and loading bay applications.
- 1,000mm and above: Used at road junctions, larger site exits, and locations where maximum viewing distance is required. The larger the mirror, the greater the clarity of the reflected image at distance.
Indoor vs Outdoor Mirrors
Indoor convex mirrors can use standard acrylic mirror faces, which are lightweight and shatter-resistant. Outdoor mirrors require additional specification:
- UV-stabilised acrylic or polycarbonate face to resist yellowing and degradation from sunlight
- Stainless steel face for the most demanding environments — particularly coastal or industrial sites where corrosion is a concern
- Weatherproof housing and fittings suitable for continuous outdoor exposure
Acrylic mirrors provide a clear reflection and are the standard choice for most applications. Stainless steel mirrors are more durable but produce a slightly less sharp image — they are the right choice where longevity in harsh conditions outweighs image quality.
Dome Mirrors
Dome mirrors are ceiling-mounted and provide a 360-degree view of the area below. They are effective in retail environments, warehouses, and large open spaces where a single mirror needs to cover multiple approach directions simultaneously. They cannot be adjusted to focus on a specific angle, which makes them less suitable for targeted blind-spot coverage, but their all-round visibility makes them excellent for general overview applications.
Mounting Options
Mirrors can be mounted in several ways, depending on the installation point:
- Wall brackets: Suitable for positioning mirrors at corners, on building exteriors, or at the end of racking aisles
- Post mounts: For locations where there is no suitable wall — free-standing posts with swivel heads allow height and angle adjustment
- Ceiling mounts: For dome mirrors or where wall space is not available
Adjustable swivel brackets allow fine-tuning of the mirror angle after installation — important because even small changes in angle can significantly alter what the mirror covers.
Maintenance
A dirty mirror provides far less protection than a clean one — even light soiling significantly reduces contrast and clarity. Mirrors in dusty or dirty environments should be cleaned regularly as part of routine site maintenance. Any mirror that is cracked, significantly scratched, or has developed distortion should be replaced: a distorted image can be misleading and may provide less protection than no mirror at all.
